Kat’s Story: Finding support and community as a foster carer

When Kat first began fostering, she didn’t expect how important connecting with other foster carers would become. Being part of a wider community of carers - including others supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), like Kat - helped her feel understood and supported in her role.

“Sometimes, you just need someone who really gets what your day looks like. Who’s been through the EHCPs, the assessments, the difficult days, and the big wins for all our children in foster care.”

A space that understands

Our fantastic community of foster carers across Rotherham has made a real difference for Kat. Talking and connecting with people who understand the day-to-day realities of fostering gives her reassurance and practical advice when she needs it most.

The support comes from carers looking out for one another. Whether it’s a quick message to ask a question, sharing experiences, or meeting up for a coffee, it’s about knowing there’s someone on the other end who understands.

What makes it work isn’t just the formal training or professional input, but also shared experience - foster carers supporting each other in ways only they can.

“We’ve become so tight-knit. If someone has a down day, then we’re all in that group, arranging for a coffee morning to support that person.”

Support for all children

As a foster carer, Kat knows how different each child’s needs can be. But she also knows the value of having people around her who understand what it means to care for a child who processes the world a little differently.

Whether it’s signposting to resources, recommending sensory-friendly activities, or simply saying “you’re doing a good job”, the connections she’s made help her feel supported day to day.
