Starting university is an exciting step for any young person. For Kaci, who grew up in foster care in Rotherham, it’s also the beginning of a journey shaped by her experiences and the people who have supported her along the way.
This September, Kaci is moving to Leeds to study social work at university. Alongside learning new skills, she told us she’s looking forward to “sharing an accommodation, meeting new people, and partying – yeah, partying.”
We spoke to Kaci and her carer Fiona about the journey that’s brought her here.
Kaci explained how her time in foster care has influenced her decision to become a social worker.
Growing up in foster care meant working with different social workers over the years. Within that, Kaci’s had fantastic experiences with support that has inspired her – but she also understands what children in care need, and this has motivated her choice of career.
“I’ve grown up in foster care from a young age and had a few social workers. I’ve had both positive and negative experiences, so I want to take those and be a support network for other children and help to direct and support their needs.”
Kaci told us about the support she has had from Fiona, her foster carer, who continues to be a big part of her life.
From talking through the practicalities of applying for university, to offering encouragement, Fiona has been by her side. She has even shared her own experiences of university with her daughters, helping Kaci know what to expect. But it’s not just the practical help that matters. It’s the trust, empathy, and emotional safety Fiona continues to offer. Kaci told us,
“[Fiona]’s aware of how tough it might be mentally, so she’s shown a great deal of empathy and has always encouraged me to achieve my full potential, both in education and in day-to-day life.”
Fiona also shared her thoughts on what helps young people thrive:
“Life is all about balance. You’ve got to have balance, whatever you do. And if you don’t get that balance, then you’re going to crash somewhere. But then again, if you’ve got your family network and everybody else, that backs you up again. Be patient, and listen.”
Kaci’s also had the backing of a wider team - professionals like her Personal Adviser (PA), whose help has been key in navigating the logistics of going to uni.
“My PA has helped me with funding and has reached out to people at the university to get more information on the services that are available to me over there.”
This kind of practical support, often behind the scenes, has made sure Kaci feels ready and reassured as she makes the move.
Looking ahead
As she prepares for university, Kaci will be balancing her studies with her part-time job. It’s another step towards independence, and she’s proud of the opportunities she’s creating for herself.
At Fostering Rotherham, we’re so proud of everything Kaci’s achieved so far, and we’ll be cheering her on as she starts her new chapter at university.
Could you foster a young person in Rotherham?
