How old are children in care when they leave care?

Children usually leave care when they’re 18 years old, but in some cases a child in care may remain with their foster family beyond childhood.

There are also some cases where, with support from their fostering family and social worker, a child in care may move on to live in supported lodgings from age 16 and over.
