How old are looked after children when they leave care?

Children usually leave care when they’re 18 years old, but in some cases a looked after child may remain with their foster family beyond childhood.

There are also some cases where, with support from their foster family and social worker, a looked after child may move on to live semi-independently from age 16 and over.
